Hello Steven,

One possibility is that you have a large database and an non-indexed search
going on.  Also, Kurt pointed out to me recently that OpenLDAP 1.2.x will
accept an incorrect filter and silently do wrong things with it (such as search
the entire directory).  Another thing I will point out is that in earlier
versions of OpenLDAP 1.2.x, I had problems with the stability of the slapd
process with replication enabled.  I do not know if these problems are
resolved in the latest (1.2.9) version of openldap, or unique to my platform
(64-bit, alpha OSF4.0e), but this also does not appear to match the symptoms
you are reporting (in my case, enabling replication would cause slapd to
dump core).
