The docs were wrong in this case; the required hooks for the overlay support 
here were not implemented. These hooks have been added to CVS HEAD and this 
configuration works correctly there. The changes will be part of 2.4. I don't 
think they'll be backported for 2.3.

Right, that was the intent, but because of the missing hooks, it couldn't work.
