I don't recall why, but I had OPENLDAP_REL_ENG_2_3_4 as sticky tag on my 
configure instead of the branch tag OPENLDAP_REL_ENG_2_3 when  I checked 
out RE23 for testing; see the other post to the ITS.  It seems now to 
work as intended, I've closed that ITS.  Thanks anyway.
