One problem actually remained: in access_allowed_mask() a variable 
"control" is defined but not initialized, and its value is used later on 
in a test.  The variable is not used nor initialized in any other bit of 
code, I suspect it's a leftover from code reworking.  If this is 
correct, I'd remove it along with its test; otherwise, the code needs be 
fixed.
