Yes, in 2.2 the glue code only intercepted search operations. In 2.3 the 
glue code intercepts all the write operations too, so that a glued tree 
will work with the syncrepl provider overlay. I guess we didn't take 
this side effect into account. Thanks for the bug report, looks like the 
design needs some adjusting.
