BackendInfo pointer with its own. The
overlays/slapover.txt:be_private and bd_info pointer for the added 
backends. The chain and proxycache
overlays/slapover.txt:overlays are two complementary examples of this 
usage. The chain overlay
overlays/refint.c:      **      connect Modification* chain to our op;
overlays/pcache.c:               * build a chain of answers to store. If 
we hit the
overlays/pcache.c:               * limit, empty the chain and ignore the 
rest.

You see, there's no trace of chain.* in slapd/overlays/ in my checkout. 
 Did you make distclean && configure && make depend && make ?
