I finally got around to test your fix and it works fine. I first tried 2.2.19
without the patch and I could easily reproduce the hang, then applied the
patch to backend.c and I can't force the hang anymore. I'll do further
testing before I put it on our production servers.
Real computer scientists don't comment their code. The identifiers are
so long they can't afford the disk space.
