slapd error (ITS#996)

After running make install and testing slapd by entering:

/usr/local/libexec/slapd at the command line.  I recieve an error:

ld.so.1: slapd: fatal: libgdbm.s0.2 open failed: No such file or directory.

I installed gdbm at /gdbm-1.8.0 and the libraries are at /usr/local/lib

Is there a setting for the database to be called.  I have not rebooted since
the

install.
