First, ldbm2ldif? do you ldbmcat (LDBM->LDIF) or ldif2ldbm (LDIF->LDBM).
If the latter, try using ldapadd(1) instead. It's recommended for
import of new entries.
As far as the seg fault, I haven't enough details to wager a
guess. A stack backtrace would be nice.
Also, you might try upgrading to 1.2.10.
