Too many open files (ITS#237)

Over the last few days I have encountered the following problem with OpenLdap:

Jul 26 09:53:33 gp.merit.edu slapd[4434]: accept() failed errno 24 (Too many
open files)
Jul 26 10:00:13 gp.merit.edu slapd[4434]: accept() failed errno 24 (Too many
open files)

It started under version 1.2.1 so I upgraded to version 1.2.4 to see if the
problem
would resolve itself (and it has not). The server goes into such a hung state I

cannot do a monitor query and get anything to return.

We are using OpenLdap as a place to authenticate for Radius and Cyrus.

Any help would be appreciated,
