Americans consume, on average, 10-12 grams of fiber per day. Medical experts 
agree we should consume 30-35 grams to achieve optimal health benefits. 

Studies show soluble fiber, like that found in oat bran, can significantly reduce 
cholesterol. 

Fiber is found in plant-based foods. Meat and dairy products contain no fiber.

Protein - 4 
Fiber - 0.6 

Average transit time (food consumption through elimination): 
Healthy young American - 3 days 
Constipated American - 10 days 
Elderly American - 14 days 
Rural third world resident who consumes a high fiber diet- 1 ½ days 

Fiber is the only factor that increases transit time through the bowels. Slow transit 
times have been linked to gastrointestinal diseases including diverticular disease, ulcers 
and colon cancer.
