Alan,
You said that replicated systems are for fault tolerance only.  I don't
think you would agree with yourself on that point.  You are totally ignoring
the need for increasing capacity.  The bottlenecks are not only the
computing system that the directory is running on, but also the
infrastructure itself.  For example, the network is a bottleneck at some
point and if you are looking for increasing response time, then the packet
queuing time to transition the network is significant as well.  The internet
is a great example of unpredictable queuing time - we all see that some days
are worse than others - which is not acceptable for a directory when it is
used as part of the infrastructure services.

Replicated systems... one only does this for fault tolerance.. If you
replicate names/passworrd/certs/CRLs, ACI for millions of entries all over
the world then - one will have a considerable security issue to deal with..
