LDAPAttributeSchema (5.2) has a method to support  legacy code
     getSyntax
which supports syntaxes cis, ces, etc., and 
     getSyntaxString
for support of all syntaxes. 

Shouldn't there be something similar for class LDAPMatchingRuleSchema
(5.14) which has the method
      getSyntax
which supports cis, ces, etc. but has no method for support of all syntaxes.
