Here's an example: VLV allows browsing
of a search result set, but it's always
an additional qualifier on a regular sorted
search. So, a client can observe that the

VLV, send the search without the VLV
control, and extract the useful subset
of the result set itself.

Another maybe-useful metric would be to see if it would be possible
in theory to write a front-end that acted to the client as if the extension was present, and to the server as if it was not present (or vice versa).

With paged results, it's fairly easy for a proxy with plenty of memory to do paged results on behalf of a server; with other extensions it may be much more difficult or have interesting failure modes (consider a proxy emulating dynamic attributes by going in and deleting them after the timeout - then consider the proxy crashing....)
