I couldn't change the item #169 which this belongs to so please copy this to
that area.

I implemented the changes on Kurt's whish list and set the new patch online.
Also included in the patch is the addition to the man page of slapd.conf(5).

The patch is against the source of version 1.2.1.

Hope this works for all of you. Suggestions are welcome.

It appears that this patch hasn't been integrated in 1.2.3, is there a
reason for this?

Correct, the patch is not integrated into 1.2.3.

Yes.  We try to limit maintenance releases to bug fixes only.

The timeout patch is considered an enhancement.  I am working
with the contributor on integrating the patch into -devel.
