I implemented the changes on Kurt's whish list and set the new patch online. Also included in the patch is the addition to the man page of slapd.conf(5). The patch is against the source of version 1.2.1. Hope this works for all of you. Suggestions are welcome.

Yes. We try to limit maintenance releases to bug fixes only. The timeout patch is considered an enhancement. I am working with the contributor on integrating the patch into -devel. Kurt
I applied my patch against OpenLDAP 1.2.3 and made new diffs which I put online under the following URL: http://www.internet.access.ch/openldap/ldap_patch-1.2.3_to Hope this makes adoption easier. Philipp
