(Answer) (Category) OpenLDAP Faq-O-Matic : (Category) Trash : (Answer) "ldap_bind: Can't contact LDAP server" using Debian
If running a utility such as ldapsearch returns this message using the Debian package of slapd, check that /etc/hosts.allow & hosts.deny are configured properly. From README.Debian:
Note, slapd was compiled with libwrap support, so is affected by
/etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny. It uses the name "slapd" for the
 service.
