(Answer) (Category) OpenLDAP Faq-O-Matic : (Category) OpenLDAP Software FAQ : (Category) Configuration : (Category) SLAPD Configuration : (Answer) What should default referral be set to?
If you server holds the root of your directory information tree, you likely should set the default referral to a server with global knowledge OR leave it unset.

If you're using Internet style naming (ie: "dc=example,dc=com"), you might set as your default referral the (Xref) OpenLDAP LDAP Root Service ("ldap://root.openldap.org:389").

If you are using X.500 style naming (ie: "o=Example Company,c=XX"), you likely should set your default referral to a server holding "c=XX".
