The BDB/HDB backend is the main storage backend of slapd. It uses the Berkeley Sleepycat database to store the information.

The name back-bdb indicates that the backend is based on the Berkeley Data Base.

The name back-hdb indicates that the backend is a variant of back-bdb (which will eventually replace it), that adopts a Hierarchical structure of the internal data (FIXME: please detail).
