slapd(8) generally uses the select(2) interface, hence the number of active connections is controlled by the FD_SETSIZE macro. This macro is generally resizable. See (Xref) FD_SETSIZE is too small, how do I raise it?.

slapd(8) may use other interfaces, such as Linux's epoll(2), where available.
