What was the exact error message?

Did you then used ./configure --disable-slapd ? If yes, you only built the
OpenLDAP client libs and tools. Is this what you want?

Hmm, I don't have a clue what you want to achieve. Do you need a LDAP server?
I don't know Degreeworks at all.
