Have you tried reindexing the database? Also, note that by default a
substring filter with only one character (like mail=a*) won't use indexes,
being very slow (perhaps it's timing out?).

Newer openldap (like latest 2.3.x) has this substring "limit"
configurable in slapd.conf.
