I just went through a hellish installation on a RH system and I remember hitting that same point,.but not where I hit that point. Could you post the full slapd debug output?

 ldapsearch -x -L -s "base" -b "" supportedSASLMechanisms

returns:

 supportedSASLMechanisms: GSSAPI
