Howard, when I run the command as you described I get
this from directory:

*************** beginning of trace *************
# extended LDIF
#
# LDAPv3
# base <> with scope baseObject
# filter: (objectclass=*)
# requesting: +
#

# search result
search: 2
result: 0 Success

# numResponses: 1
*************** end of trace *************

Which doesn't tell me what extended controls are
supported in this directory.  Am I still doing
something wrong here?  

How do I configure the directory to have
password-policy server-side controls sent back to the
client?
