Need help deleting a referral

I'm experimenting with referrals and am trying to delete one I created 
using ldapmodify.  I created it ok, but now can't seem to delete it.

I'm using the following ldif syntax:

dn: cn=Barbara Jensen,dc=example,dc=com
changetype: modify
delete: objectclass
objectclass: referral
-
delete: ref
ref: ldap://servername:389/cn=Barbara%20Jensen,dc=example,dc=com


Calling ldapmodify with:
./ldapmodify -c -D 'cn=admin' -h myhost -w secret -f ./test.ldif

Presents this output:

ldap_initialize( ldap://myhost )
delete objectclass:
        referral
delete ref:
        ldap://servername:389/cn=Barbara%20Jensen,dc=example,dc=com
modifying entry "cn=Barbara Jensen,dc=example,dc=com"
modify complete
ldap_modify: Referral (10)
        referrals:
                ldap://servername:389/cn=Barbara%20Jensen,dc=example,dc=com

And the referral remains.  In despration I even tried passing the -M 
flag to ldapmodify to see if that would make a difference, no luck.

Using ldapmodify V2.2.11, going against an Iplanet v5.2 LDAP server.
