The point of replication is that changes only get made to the master, which then propagates them to the replicas. When someone attempts to make a change to a replica, the "updateref" line in the replica's slapd.conf sends back a referral to that location (which should be the master). It is then up to the client to follow that referral and make the change on the master. Most clients have no clue how to follow a referral, so don't do anything.
