I had to implement a LDAP server using OpenLDAP on a linux server. I
found the O'Reilly book to be really helpful:-

'LDAP System Administration Gerald Carter'

This covered almost all the questions I had in a very hands on way - eg
replacing NIS, interoperation with various MTAs etc.
