ldap client of server on same host

I'm a bit weak on LDAP but I could not find this topic in the archives. If I configure a host (in my case, Solaris 9/10) to use LDAP authentication through PAM, can I use an LDAP server running on the same host?

The documentation for the native solaris ldap says that you CANNOT do this. But since I'm not an LDAP guru, I don't quite see why not.

My goal is to have a remote host by a replication client of a central server. Then if I want to login to the remote host, it will use its local copy of the directory since the master server(s) may often be unreachable.

Has anyone done this before?

Thanks!
Steve
