You haven't tuned your bdb database at all with the DB_CONFIG file. With
~ some tuning, (or by disabling transaction logs - just for the import!),
we do 250000 in about an hour (or 13 minutes) ...

| 90min, that's normal on a Celeron 333 with ultra-scsi (one hd, no raid)??

If you have no DB_CONFIG file.
