slapd-ldap and target server restart

Openldap 2.2.13

Anonymous access to slapd and also to slapd-ldap target server.  slapd-ldap
keeps connection open to target.  If/when target server goes away and then
comes back (ie
gets restarted as ours does each night), subsequent queries to slapd result
in:

result: 52 Server is unavailable

(as reported by ldapsearch).  Only solution I've found is to restart slapd
but this won't
cut it in production.

Suggestions?
