it is no CFLAGS, it is CPPFLAGS, just my 2cents. =)

BTW, we use our own openssl, located in /opt/openssl, it works flawlessly =)

our setup:

CFLAGS="-03 -march=i686 -mcpu=i686"
CXXFLAGS="-03 -march=i686 -mcpu=i686"
CPPFLAGS="-I/opt/openssl/include"
LDDFLAGS="-L/opt/openssl/lib"

Hopes this helps! =)
