I changed my PHP code, so if you type 3 or fewer characters, I search
for

(|(attr=abc*)(attr=*abc)) instead of (attr=*abc*)  (where "abc" is the
string you entered)

Problem solved... and 9 times out of 10, it finds what you were looking
for.
