I don't think (But I haven't double checked yet) that I have a system limit on this file size - 

For example, one of my ldap databases (on the same machine) has a 6.8GB id2entry.bdb file (and this database works fine)

I haven't checked all the other suggestions I have gotten yet, however, to make sure I can actually do other operations on files of this size.

mmm.. are you running openldap  on linux with ext[23]? These filesystems
have got the limit of 2gb files. Maybe this is the problem.
