Well, doing it before shutdown won't help any as far as the memory cache goes. It is generally recommended to shut down slapd before rebooting, to make sure everything gets written out.


As far as the memory cache goes, you need to do a db_recover when the system comes up, but in general you don't want to do one every time you start slapd. Hopefully, of course, you rarely reboot your systems. ;)
