If you're using a recent enough version of the software, which you don't
mention (2.1.late or 2.2) add the

database monitor

directive to your slapd.conf; then look for
a base of "cn=Current,cn=Time,cn=Monitor"
and ask for an attributeType of "monitorTimestamp"
This works for 2.2; 2.1 stored the value in
"modifyTimeStamp".
