It definitely isn't "left over" after the BDB install. It's there on
purpose and even sought after by Openldap, according to Kurt:

'ls -l /usr/local/BerkeleyDB.4.2/lib/'

-rw-r--r--    1 root     root      1077618 feb  5 09:11 libdb-4.2.a
-rw-r--r--    1 root     root          802 feb  5 09:07 libdb-4.2.la
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root       874666 feb  5 09:07 libdb-4.2.so
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           12 feb  5 09:11 libdb-4.so ->
libdb-4.2.so
-rw-r--r--    1 root     root      1077618 feb  5 09:11 libdb.a
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           12 feb  5 09:11 libdb.so ->
libdb-4.2.so

However, as I posted, a single './configure' parameter is enough to make
the compile choose DSOs instead.

Chances (95%) are that if they do, the CC will never
