slapd.conf threads setting

I'm in the process of troubleshooting a slow-down of my
Postfix+Courier+OpenLDAP servers after a fairly large
increase in users. I won't get OT regarding the specifics,
but I'm interested in knowing how the number of threads
OpenLDAP runs relates to the number of queries it can
handle. Increasing the setting seems to result in the
setting + 3 slapd processes. It seems only one shows high
load, suggesting they the threads are not the problem.

Server is a bit dated. OpenLDAP 2.0.21 (custom compile of
RH's RPM. Added BDB to the configure as GDBM was unstable).

Thanks
