Taken to an exteme, this would imply that releases should never be made,
everyone should be using CVS and reading the commit logs.

I saw problems on my own machine (which was running a slave) with
2.1.22, I looked for updates for my distro, and checked the download
page, and *nothing* I found there told me it was likely due to bugs in
2.1.22.

Just as the first thing Quanah tells posters is to upgrade to the latest
release, the first thing people supporting a distro would do is to tell
them to update the provided update package, and at present there is
nothing that encourages distros to do so.

Again, I haven't seen anything in announce saying that 2.1.22 had known
stability problems, only the normal "all users are encouraged to
upgrade" message every release of every piece of software has.

If you are happy with people assuming that 2.1.22 is as good as openldap
gets, that's fine by me, but I think it would be doing yourselves a
disservice.
