More information would be helpful:

What operating system is the host running?
What version of OpenLDAP are you using?
What type of connector are you using (built in LDAP plugin, NSS_LDAP, ???)

From what you've written, I'd guess that the plugin you are using doesn't
understand how to move on after a timeout to the second host, which would not be anything addressable by this list (although people here may choose to help you because they have the knowledge. ;) ).
