Authenticate Linux users securely using Active Directory (W2K)

Is there a way to configure OpenLDAP to encrypt only the password when
authenticating against Active Directory, to save the trouble of enabling SSL
and obtaining a certificate for Active Directory?

This is in a small internal LAN.

Or, is obtaining an SSL certificate for Active Directory required to do any
type of encryption, even for one field (namely the password?)
