slapd doesn't run as daemon

Hi list

i installed openldap2-2.1.12-44 (SuSE 8.2) on two computers, configured it
in the same way (copied config files from one to other) and it works fine.
But:
On the first       : slapd starts - forked - detached and runs
On the second  : slapd starts and runs

startcmd:
   /sbin/startproc -p /var/run/slapd/slapd.pid /usr/lib/openldap/slapd 
-h ldaps:/// -g ldap -u ldap

Did anyone know why it happens?
In the docs and man pages i couldn't find any hint to this. The man page
only says that slapd starts in daemon mode automatically.

Any help will be appreciated.
