However, for good measure I've changed the root DN to use "people" rather than "users". It doesn't change any of my problems.

That is not "the root DN".

Chain: either

ou=users,dc=avtechpulse,dc=com

*OR*

ou=people,dc=avtechpulse,dc=com

can be added to by tacking on a new rDN (relative domain name) at the front (assuming correct object classes and attributes). But you can't break the chain and just go adding any old link halfway through the chain.

It works for me and thousands of others ;)
