Attribute 'member' is meant to contain distinguished names pointing to all the member entries. Storing e-mail addresses there is a syntax violation (OpenLDAP 2.1.x will catch this). => This object class is not suitable for e-mail distribution lists.

Check the mailing list archive. This question was raised quite a few times.
