for NIS, see the RFC 2307 "an approach to use ldap as a network Information Service" (maby also the 2307 bis) and you will find all you need in the shemas of openldap. you will probably need also the pam-ldap and nss-ldap libraries. see

posixAccount, as you seem to have discovered, can be used as a NIS replacement.
