making LDAP version3 work with version 2 clients

Hi,

I just compiled openLDAP 2.1.16 and it works fine when I try ldapsearch.
I can see that it is using version3 LDAP.  When I try to connect to the
LDAP server using PINE, it gives me a protocol error.  I've read the
manpage in ldapsearch and it says that you can do a "-P 2" to force
version 2 of LDAP.  Since I can't execute that flag in pine, is there a
workaround so that my LDAP server will talk to version 2 clients?
