Shadow MD5 Crypt password support

Please pardon me if this has been addressed before. I was not able to find
an answer in the list archives.

I ave a need to be able to have passwords within OpenLDAP, used for binding,
that are in the same format as /etc/shadow would be. It is my understanding
that /etc/shadow uses an 8 character salt, while OpenLDAP's {SMD5} hash uses
only 2.

Is there a specific technical reason why a hash scheme could not be
implemented to support this format?

Thanks
