You probably said before, but I don't remember:

OS/distro?
LDAP version?
ftpd type/version?

Does ldd ftpd whatever-it-is show pam support?

I compiled my own wu-ftpd 2.6.2 especially to support pam - 2.6.2 has
nice chroot jailing..
