SOS - passwd changing

hi,
   pl help me out.
 I had configured LDAP for user authentication by
running nscd and authconfig.

Now when I change to the original conf (ie non-LDAP
one) the user password is limited to only 8 characters
if changed to > 8 chars it doesnt't authenticate

I have restored all the backed up files
(pam),slapd.conf etc
pl help me out as there are thousand of users changing
password daily
