Sorry, I had to giggle a bit ("giggle" would be "rire un peu" or
similar.)

We're obviously talking at cross purposes. Why are you using cc and not
gcc? What Unix (or Linux) distro are you using (you mentioned Linux
packages)?

Here's my Red Hat Linux 7.2/gcc 3.0.4 "do-conf", which works perfectly:

CPPFLAGS="-I/usr/local/ssl/include/openssl -I/usr/local/include/sasl \
-I/usr/include/gdbm -I/usr/local/BerkeleyDB.4.1/include" \
LDFLAGS="-L/usr/local/ssl/lib -L/usr/local/BerkeleyDB.4.1/lib \
-L/usr/local/lib/sasl2" ./configure \
	--enable-bdb=yes \
	--enable-ldbm=yes \
	--enable-crypt=yes \
	--enable-dnssrv=yes \
	--enable-rlookups=yes \
	--enable-ipv6=no \
	--enable-local=yes \
	--enable-referrals=yes \
	--enable-monitor=yes \
	--with-tls \
	--enable-dynamic=yes
