OpenLDAP Software, itself, has little to do with logging into a computer.
Your problem is likely with pam_ldap, nss_ldap, and/or the migration
tools you mentioned.  For help in using these packages, you should
use lists setup specifically for users of these packages.  These
include:
        ldap-nis-request@padl.com for general LDAP/NIS discussion
        nssldap-request@padl.com for nss_ldap discussion
        pamldap-request@padl.com for pam_ldap discussion
