Large 10 meg log files in the var/openldap-data directory

There are several 'log' files in the var/openldap-data directory that are
about 10 megs each.  They are named log.000000001, log.00000002, etc and
they seem to be getting created at an alarming rate.  I tried viewing them ,
but they seem to be in binary format.  Can these files be deleted?  What are
they used for?  I'm using bdb backend if that matters.
